Arcus Hunting product review with Lucas Mashtare –
Arcus Hunting, LLC is an acquisition and organic growth platform seeking to build a strong portfolio of leading brands in the bowhunting and archery consumables and accessories category. Under its brands – Tink’s®, Dead Down Wind®, Obsession Bows™, Ramcat® Broadheads and Trophy Taker® – Arcus markets and manufactures a range of leading deer lures, attractants, scent control products, and premium bows.

Dead Down Wind‘s™ focus has always been to produce the safest, most effective products possible by using science as our foundation. We are driven to develop products capable of eliminating the toughest and widest range of odors. Contrary to what a competitor may claim, there isn’t a single product that is effective on EVERY type of odor. From the beginning, Dead Down Wind™ has led the way, using real science and developing specific products to control the odors that matter.

Scent prevention is a process and a routine. Hunters plan and strategize each and every season on how to go undetected for that opportunity of a lifetime. The goal being to reduce your odor signatures to the lowest possible level.

Dead Down Wind™ uses enzymes – a natural catalyst for change. They break down odors at a molecular level, a process we call Enzyme ScentPrevent® or ESP. The use of enzymes allows Dead Down Wind™ products to eliminate a wider range of odors. We call this technology 3D+ Broad Spectrum. While some might have you believe the only thing you need to concern yourself with is bacteria related to perspiration, that is simply not the case. Hunters carry many foreign odors to the field that can alert whitetail or other big game animals. The science behind a big game animal’s nose will tell you it’s looking for any telltale odor that might give them an idea of who or what is in the area. That’s why we specifically formulate a broad range of odor control, not just one type of bacteria.

Dead Down Wind™ does not offer cover scent. Scent prevention is a discipline and process that requires a complete system that focuses on our three-phase system – Laundry, Hygiene and Field – which actively work together to kill bacteria, not just covering odor but annihilating right at the source.

Tink’s –
Established in 1972, Tink’s® has been the number one brand, and number one performing line in deer scents and lures. Trusted by generations of hunters for nearly 50 years, Tink’s® lures meet the needs of every phase of the hunt along with a broad variety of dispenser options. Tink’s® natural whitetail lures are certified CWD-free, extensively tested for effectiveness, and simple to use. Whether you’re hunting trophy whitetails, black bears, big bull elk, monster moose, pigs or predators, we have a product to help you succeed. Proven Innovation. Proven Results.

Obsession Bows –
Obsession crashed the established bow industry party with designs by engineers obsessed with perfection for those who refuse to settle for yesterday’s technology. Hunters, competitors, and enthusiasts of every caliber have something to gain from an Obsession, from bragging rights in camp, a spot on the medal stand, or winning the backyard bet.

Based in a one-stoplight town in the state of Georgia, our small-town values center on family, friends, and a never-ending commitment to building the very best products for every caliber of archer. We understand bows are a significant investment for our customers and we value the trust you place in us when you purchase an Obsession. Our drive to excel, to “Change Or Get Left Behind,” enables us to continue to defy expectations and be the technological leader of the industry.

Ramcat
The Ramcat is a wickedly accurate, absolutely devastating broadhead. Much more than a cut-on-contact or chisel-tip broadhead, the tip of every Ramcat is a purpose-driven, technically superior design with a multi-faceted focus:

Concave scoops create an airfoil that eliminate wind planing and forces air to slip over the ferrule and arrow shaft for best-in-class accuracy and impact energy.
On impact, the airfoil creates an outward force on flesh, pushing it away from the shaft for exceptional penetration and a massive wound channel. This performance is achieved with any recurve, compound or crossbow, at any speed. Today’s lineup of Ramcat broadheads are the most advanced, best performing, best value for bowhunters. Hits Like A Ram, Cuts Like A Cat!

Trophy Taker –
For twenty years Trophy Taker has built a reputation for easy-to-install and silent arrow rests that are tough enough for hardcore hunters, with the reliability that sends competitive archers to the medal stand. A never-ending commitment to excellence is the driving force behind Trophy Taker and we back it with a lifetime warranty.

Today, the quality and performance of Trophy Taker has expanded to include more vital accessories for today’s performance archer. Everything we build is designed to perform – it’s just that simple. Perform, don’t fail, so you can achieve. What began in the rugged mountains of Montana is now an attitude shared across the country: don’t settle for compromises, there is a better way. We think our customers agree, You Can Settle, or You Can Be a Trophy Taker!

Arcus Hunting Brands – Lucas Mashtare

WTR Lucas | Hunting BrandsWelcome to Gear Wednesday. What is Gear Wednesday with Whitetail Rendezvous? I came back from ATA and I met a lot of great folks. We’re going to talk to Lucas Mashtare. Lucas is the Marketing Manager for Arcus Hunting. Lucas, welcome to Gear Wednesday with Whitetail Rendezvous.

Thanks for having me, Bruce. I appreciate it.

Lucas, we’ve talked in the past and we get connected and we did some filming on Facebook Live at ATA. I wanted to get with you one-on-one and talk about Arcus Hunting because a lot of my audience doesn’t know who Arcus Hunting is. They know some of your product: Dead Down Wind, Tink’s, Ramcat, Obsession Bows but they don’t know Arcus Hunting. Let’s talk about Arcus Hunting.

To dive in, Arcus Hunting essentially is nothing in a sense. It’s the parent brand of Tink’s, Dead Down Wind, Obsession Bows, Trophy Taker and Ramcat Broadheads. We acquired Rack One Whitetail Systems, which is a supplement for whitetail. Arcus is the parent holding company.

How did Arcus get started?

Arcus is a conglomerate of several companies in the hunting space. We had an investor group. We’re privately owned and held. They took all their money and they wanted to take these companies and put them together to make a bunch of sister companies. That’s how Arcus came about. They see a good investment and then they take it, run with it and make it better. That was the goal of Arcus.

How does that help the hunter in the field? How has that helped me while I’m in the field? What does that do for me?

Having the brands that we have, especially Tink’s and Dead Down Wind, those brands by themselves are standalone in their categories for scent elimination even scents and lures. Tink’s has been around for many years. Dead Down Wind has been around for a decade. They always are at the top of their class without a doubt. As far as harvesting a whitetail, Arcus Hunting is predominantly bowhunting-oriented but as far as from a scents and scent elimination factor, every tool we have, every product we have, every skew we have in our lineup is going to make you a better hunter at the end of the day.

Like humans, whitetail is known for taking the road less traveled. Share on X

When I was at ATA 2019, I did sit and talk to Tink Nathan. It’s unbelievable. You think about the industry and where it’s come and Tink and I talked about that because Tink started off with an idea. They started off with a formula. They started off with something and then somebody like Arcus Hunting comes along and says, “We can do it better. We can bring more products to more people, drive more marketing, and make these products available,” because Tink’s is a known brand. Dead Down Wind is a go-to brand. It’s in my gear pack, in my bin and it’s been there for a long time. Lucas, talking about that, how did you get where you are? You’re a Marketing Manager for a major brand company. How did you get there?

I served in the military and I was Six Unit Fort Benning and Fort Bragg. I never got a chance to hunt much. I grew up as an avid hunter. I’d fish all the time. I was always out with my dad and my grandfather. I always had a passion for it. I missed it. When I got out of the military, I went to Clemson University on my GI Bill. I started to get my degree in sports management and sports marketing. When I was doing that, the whole time I was working at a willow plantation in South Carolina called the Clinton House and it’s outside of Columbia, South Carolina. I’d go help out there and we’d do food plots, we’d do events, we’d do pretty much anything to get folks ready for their next season.

After that, I graduated. I went to Georgia DNR, taught shooting sports programs as a varsity level sport in the school system and also created 100 development programs throughout the state. It wasn’t what I wanted to do, but it was a great stepping stone, a great experience. I found my role at Arcus Hunting as a Marketing Manager and I’ve been here for a couple of years now. I loved the brands. These are the brands I grew up with, especially Tink’s and Dead Down Wind. As soon as I made a switch to Obsession Bows to Ramcat, I’m a little biased now. At the same time, they’re quality brands and I’m the first to tell you if I don’t trust in something, I won’t shoot it regardless if it’s our product or somebody else’s. I won’t use it if it’s not a quality product.

Did you answer a want ad for Arcus Hunting? Is that how you got in?

A little bit. At the time, it was the Marketing Director Head. We were acquaintances. He knew I lived down in Georgia and he reached out to me and said, “Would you be interested in a position?” I said, “Maybe.” A couple of months later, the job posting popped up. I went in for an interview and I had the job. It worked to my favor, honestly. I love the area we live in. My wife and I live in Rutledge, Georgia, ten minutes outside of Covington which is where all our brands are, the headquarters is for Arcus Hunting. It’s a great area, lots to do around here, lots of hunting. Georgia is a huge hunting state, especially when you start looking at Pittman-Robertson, dollars and how many hunters live in this area. It’s right up there with Texas and Pennsylvania and all your major states. It’s a hunter’s paradise essentially.

Lucas got involved in the industry and then kept hunting, kept applying what he loved. Through relationships and that’s what you said, you had a relationship. Timing was right and it’s hard for folks to get to where Lucas is. It’s not easy, but it’s possible. It’s doable. That’s the takeaway I want everybody in our audience, guy or gal. It doesn’t matter. If you have a passion being in the industry, then figure out how to do it. Reach out to me at WhitetailRendezvous.com. I’ve got a neat Rolodex, but it takes more than that. It takes going to ATA. It takes going to volunteering at conservation groups. It takes a lot. Does it take luck? It takes hard work and a little bit of luck doesn’t hurt. It’s like shooting a mature, big, ten-point buck. Was it all luck? Maybe for somebody but for most of us, it’s a lot of hard work. Since this is Gear Wednesday sponsored by Whitetail Rendezvous for Arcus Hunting, what product do you want to start off with?

If you have a passion being in the industry, then figure out how to do it. Share on X

We’ll start right with the bows. We introduced a brand-new bow for the year at the show, which was the FX30. I’m going to go with our flagship and our most commonly sought-after bow for the year and that was the Obsession Lawless. A lot of people at the show asked me why we named it the Lawless. I wanted a cool name to start with. If you’ve ever seen the movie Lawless, it’s about prohibition era moonshiners up in Virginia who were brothers and they ran moonshine back in the day. They broke all the rules. They didn’t care. They were the law essentially. Obsession by default is not the brand that everybody’s going to follow. You’re the wolf among sheep. We always have been saying be the wolf, stand out from the crowd. Don’t be afraid to try something different, try something new, which is exactly what Obsession does.

That’s why we broke the mold, especially in this category. It’s the most forgiving short brace height bow on the market. It is 5.125 inches brace height, but it shoots like a seven-inch brace height. The speeds are up to 370 feet per second. It’s unheard of. The bow is meant to perform. I went over in 2018, I was shooting the 7XP. I harvested a few whitetails with it. Right out of the box with the Lawless in 2019, I had my icebreaker doe which was the freezer failure essentially. That was the first time I had even got it, set it up in about a week. I put about 300 shots through it and then went up to upstate New York to hunt with it. I also went on a bear hunt up to North Carolina and we did a spot and stalk bear hunt up there and harvested my first bear ever. It ended up being 468 pounds. It has done exactly what I wanted it to do.

They talk about rifle fit, how does that bow fit you?

It fits well. What makes a difference is a grip in the bow. All Obsessions are outfitted with Anti-TorqueLess Grip, which means it’s going to sit right in the archer’s hands. Every time you’re going to have that consistent shot after shot. Once you start shooting Obsession, what a lot of people are going to realize is it fits like a glove and that’s exactly how your bow should fit you.

How is it eliminating the torque?

It’s angled. It’s a narrow grip. It will fit someone with a smaller hand. It will fit their hand just as well as it would mine. It fits right in that V line where you want it to. Every time upon draw it’s going to sit right there consistently time after time. Grip the angle that it’s cut everything that goes into it. It’s built to fit your hand. It doesn’t torque. It won’t roll over on you. It’s one of those things that you want consistency in your shot and this grip is going to give it to you.

Do you think that’s the most important enhancement they made to that bow to make it efficient?

That’s one of the minor details on this bow. I’d say the cam system is probably the biggest change from our bow in 2019 to 2018. We introduced a 3-Track Cam system. The reason why we did that wasn’t just to make the consumer happy, to make the dealer happy as well. The 3-Track Cam system that we introduced, you’ve got one groove, two grooves and three grooves. That’s what truly makes it a 3-Track Cam system. What this means is we’re getting better speeds out of it, but you also don’t need a bow press anymore. In the past, we’ve always had draw-specific cams, cams that need mod changes but we never had one that you didn’t need a bow press. All you have to change is a little black ear on all the bows. This makes it nicer for the dealer, nicer for the consumer. It’s an easy swap in and out. When we’re at shows and stuff like that even, we can take a set of mods and change them out. What a lot of people don’t realize is we limited the number of skews we have and how much mods folks have to come in and purchase. When a dealer has to get a mod kit for every single model of bow they have, that’s a huge inconvenience for them. We have the same cam system throughout all our FX series bows as well as our Lawless. All they have to do is they get one set of mods and they can change out any bow because it’s the same exact cam system for every bow. The draw lengths will change, but they’re the same exact mod sets that you’ll have across the whole lineup, which is convenient for folks.

I’m a stocking dealer. What you’re telling me with the Lawless, I buy one mod kit that fits all. Is that correct?

Yes. We’ve got the Lawless, the FX30, the FX6, the FX7 and the FXL. It will be the same cam that you’ll find in each one of those bows.

Are the cams the same?

Yes.

I only have to buy one cam set for each one of those to make any adoptions or corrections that I need to make?

Exactly.

That seems like a competitive advantage to me and is going to make dealers happy.

That’s what they wanted. We might have been a little bit behind the game. We don’t offer a rotating mod on this bow, but we do on our Turmoil and also our Hashtag packages, which is our youth compound bow. For a high-end bow, you want it to look pristine. You want it to look like a personalized option for that consumer. These bows, the cam is decked out. It’s got orange cans. It’s got flow orange strings on it. It is easy to maintain, operate and it’s a custom bow at the end of the day, which is what people should have for a price point bow like that retailing at $1,000.

You said $1,000 so it’s not the highest bow, but it’s not the lowest priced bow in the marketplace.

It’s right there. It’s competitive with your Hoyts, Mathews and Bowtechs. It’s right there. We do offer price point bows. We have the Turmoil RZ which is $699, but that bow shoots 350 feet per second. You can find that at any authorized Obsession dealers. You can find it at Bass Pro, Cabela’s. It’s out there but that bow for the money, you’re getting a high-end bow and a lot of people don’t realize that you can get the same speeds. I have a mid-price bow as you will a high-end bow half the time. It’s going to have little tweaks and little changes that are going to make it stand out from a $1,000 bow to a price point bow.

What have I got to add to that bow? I’ve got a sexy bow. It’s going to do everything I want. Talk to me about the stabilizer, I need a release. What do I have to add to that to accessorize it out so I can go out and shoot that 400-pound bear?

To trick it out, all you’re going to need is a bare bow starting fresh. You’re going to need to tie a D-loop. You’re going to have to get a peep sight. You’re going to have to work on getting a rest. The sister company of Obsession, which we also own is called Trophy Taker. It was acquired from Dan Evans a few years ago. It was a Montana-based company. A lot of people don’t realize is every product end under the Trophy Taker name is backed by a lifetime warranty. No matter what, you’ll only have to buy one accessory for your bow. From that lineup, we offer rests, stabilizers, and quivers. The only things we don’t offer under Arcus Hunting are a sight. That’s the only thing that we’re missing essentially. As far as a rest, we have a LockUp Trophy Taker Rest. This is how your arrows are flying. This is what’s putting it all together. This is what’s allowing you to paper tune your bow.

A lot of folks have always asked for a rest and a LockUp. What Trophy Taker is always been known for is their limb-driven rest, which has faster arrow clearance and a Buss Cable rest. A lot of people don’t realize that. There’s a huge advantage of shooting one of our SmackDown Pro Click series rest. You push the LockUp lever and it will engage in place. About nine-tenths into the draw cycle it will reengage with the piston and it will allow the rest to fall back down upon your release of the arrow. It’s a huge advantage. It’s got elevation and windage adjustments. Those also have micro click adjustments as well as it’s huge for these rests. Those are a lifetime warranty. If you drop these out of a truck when you’re driving, if you have it fall out of a tree stand or something like that and you snap the launcher blade or one of the arms, you send it in. If we can’t fix it, we’ll replace it, which is huge especially in this day and age.

Your bow should fit you like a glove. Share on X

They’ve never got broken or run over or anything like that?

Never. I do have the new quiver. We offer the stabilizers. We offer a 6-inch BuzzKiller and BuzzKiller Pro stabilizer. We have a lot of different color options for that as well. This was my personal bow in 2019 that I shot the bear and the doe with. This has been good for me. We have our Silencer Quiver by Trophy Taker. What this has been doing is we put two sets of grippers so you can have micro diameter arrows or your standard diameter arrows. It will hold up five at a time. It’s a Quick-Detach system so it’s convenient, quiet. You take it on and off in a second. It’s got a rope hanger. You get up in your tree stand, get in your blind, you get all set up. It’s a remarkable price point too. It’s retailed at $399. It’s affordable, quiet. It’s got a soft touch hood. It feels like velvet even though it doesn’t look it. It’s quiet. That’s another thing that you’re going to be outfitted on your bow so you have the most success for your next home. It’s all preparation. I was a Boy Scout and my dad got me to become an Eagle Scout eventually. One thing I always took away from that was always be prepared. If anyone’s been in the woods and forgot something, you’re going to know that from there on out you’re always going to be meticulous with your equipment. You want to know how it functions, how it operates, how to set it up. It’s key to being successful in the woods.

Let’s go from the bow to the business end of the equation, Ramcat Broadheads. What makes them special in the marketplace?

WTR Lucas | Hunting BrandsRamcat is entirely different. All the proof is in the ferrule. We have a patented Concave Scoop tip on the front. We have our Cage Ripper broadhead. The beauty of this one is that the Concave Scoop in the front, which is our patented technology. What this allows you to do, whether you shoot with one blade, two blades, and three blades. It will always fly like your field tip, which is what you want. When you’re changing your setups and moving over three inches and up two inches, that throws your whole game off. You want to practice with what the scenario, same tips as you’re going to shoot with. When your field tips are matching your hunting arrows that is huge. From the Ramcat lineup, we have the original Hydroshock, which everybody knows and loves. It’s done great on all our testing.

The one that I personally shoot is the Ramcat Diamondback, which was our first ever fixed blade broadhead by Ramcat. It’s got the same technology. You still have the same Concave Scoop tip, solid ferrule, and then it’s got blades on the front and the back. If you don’t have a clean pass through, it will do as much damage working back out of the animal than it did before. It’s huge blood trails, less time tracking which is exactly what you want. What the Concave Scoop does if you were to think of a boat moving through water, it displaces water away from the blades or from the prop for instance on a boat. If you think about that, you’re doubling your cutting diameter and that’s exactly what you want. You want a bigger cutting diameter, less wounding loss and more blood trail or a larger blood trail.

With scent, familiarity is a key. Share on X

For 2019, our first ever piston-driven broadhead called the Cage Ripper. By piston-driven, we’ve got the same technology in the front of the ferrule. Upon impact, it will deploy the blades to a full two-inch cutting diameter and it also has a Posi-Lock Plunger System in the back. It will stay open to that two-inch cutting diameter the whole time. The advantages of this are no more rubber bands because everybody gets their hands cut, especially if they’ve ever touched a Ramcat. Two, I like the way that we put teeth on the end of the ferrule because the biggest disadvantage with mechanical broadheads is in quartering two shot. You usually have deflection. What this allows the air to do is dig right in, which is huge for a mechanical broadhead.

Ramcat’s been around for a number of years.

The founder is still active with us. We’ll be up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania together. His name is Brett Fulton. He put a lot of time and research. His first time introducing the Ramcat, which was at the time called the Original, he went to ATA. He bought a bunch of those ballistic gels. He went out and took every Broadhead on the market, tested them head to head with a crossbow right there on the floor. He called all the media’s attention over and said, “Watch this.” It out-penetrated every other broadhead on the market. That’s how he got the name for himself. That’s how Ramcat started. It is unique that a guy took a brand and ran with it like that, but it was a ballsy move essentially which has worked out.

What have we left out?

Dead Down Wind, if you haven’t seen it, you’ll know it. The guy who was good at marketing, his name was Gary Reed back in the day. What he did a great job of is the packaging in my eyes. When you see orange in the frame, you usually can associate it with Dead Down Wind, a bottle on the shelf. You know it’s a complete system that you can trust. Hunters have been using it for years and there’s a reason why they’re using it. Dead Down Wind is a scientifically proven brand. It’s a complete system. We have three phases. Before every hunt, we’ve got the laundry, we’ve got the hygiene and we also have the field application. What a lot of people don’t realize is the system can be used year-round. It doesn’t matter if it’s for hunting. It can be used way outside the norm. I’ve worked with several groups when I was in the military and a couple of Special Force groups.

I’ve sent them over product overseas and they had been using it for a different application. Whether it’s soap, whether it’s an antiperspirant, whether it’s toothpaste, all that stuff can be used way outside of the essential hunting situation or the hunting camp situation. We’ve had soccer moms spray out their kid’s bags after a hot summer’s day when they’re running playing soccer out in the field. I’ve even sprayed my dog off with Dead Down Wind after she comes out of the pond or out of the lake chasing ducks or whatever she’s getting into. The system itself is huge. Dead Down Wind is an enzyme-based formula. What enzymes do is they’ll go in and break down the odors that matter, which is huge for hunters.

When you’re going on your average hunt, you’re going to come in contact with exhaust fumes, food. Your wife might kiss you by and she’s got a little perfume on. You got to get all that off you, but you don’t want to mask it. You want to kill the odor. What Dead Down Wind enzymes do is they eliminate odor right at the source, which is exactly what we need. Whether it’s in your boots, whether it’s on your hunting gear, it is a complete system that’ll destroy odor, which is exactly what we want. At ATA, we also showed you our addition to the lineup which was the Dead Down Wind Dead Zone unit, our new ozone generator for Dead Down Wind which rounds out the whole system.

Why don’t you talk a little bit more about that? At ATA, there are a lot of ozone products in the marketplace now. It’s because of who Arcus Hunting is and the brand awareness of Dead Down Wind, you guys got a foot up on the marketplace with that.

It’s unique. I don’t think a lot of people saw it coming. As far as the Dead Zone unit from Dead Down Wind, there are three things that make us different essentially. The first one is we introduced a two-step cleaning process. We’ve integrated a UV blue light, not just ozone but also UV blue light. What this does is it allows two-step cleaning. Every hospital system and sterilization facilities all over the United States and even Canada use that in their system. It will suck in waste chemicals, everything like that. It will change them around and make them clean air again. It will take the particles that are dirty and fix it. Like Ozone eliminates odor, it adds another facet to the whole process. We offer it in a bag system with the rechargeable battery. Each battery will last up to four hours. We have four different settings on the Ozone. It can last anywhere from four to eight hours with one single battery. Also, our output is huge. It’s 500 milligrams per hour, which is double everybody else we’ve seen on the market so far. You’re eliminating odor in less time. The tests that we put it through are even better because owning Tink’s, we have some stinky scents. We have skunk cover scent, we have red fox pee, and we have deer. You can imagine what we’ve tested inside that bag and it eliminated the odor. If they can eliminate skunk, then it works.

Since you brought up Tink’s, another iconic brand, I love the aerosol because I started misting when I was hunting elk in the Rockies. I would mist and it would go out there and filter down in canyons and everywhere. All of a sudden, the bull would come up his nose in the air because he’s following that scent and it’s a cow in estrus. I kill bulls that way and I never called. I misted them. A lot of people know it’s no secret anymore how to do that. I took Tink’s and I would do the same thing. I would spray it and then wait. It’s like rattling sequence. You let it out there and you let it drift. When you finally see a buck, it could be a couple hundred yards away but he’s coming up on that scent cone. Hit them hard and then you might give a bleed or something like that. That gets them curious. That’s my two cents on how I’ve used it. Tell me how you guys apply it and how other hunters have told you how it works.

Tink’s, even though it’s a funny brand, at the same time it’s whitetail communication. In other words, communicating with whitetail, moose, bear, deer, all those animals communicate from the scent. Familiarity is a key. Natural or synthetic, natural urine is usually par for the course. If you have natural doe estrus, that’s familiar to a whitetail. Tink’s can be broken down by three different scents. You’ve got #1 Doe-P, you’ve got Tink’s #69 and then you’ve Trophy Buck. #1 Doe-P is a calming scent. This can be used year-round in any application. What this does, it creates a common scent unless you know that doe’s in the area. This makes whitetail feel a little more at home. They’re a little less alarmed when they’re walking through the woods. Usually, if they say to watch your stand. Use a boot pad or a drag rag or something of that nature, you’re acting like you’re a deer peeing through the woods on the way to your stand. It seems like an everyday thing for them.

When you hop over to Tink’s #69, this is when you’re getting into pre-rut and rut. The role of this is the time of year when the doe is more active. Bucks are actively seeking doe. This is a breeding season. This is a doe at the peak of their estrous cycle. This means they’re ready to breed. They’re getting after it and they’re running around. They’re exerting a lot of energy trying to find these does. We’ve all seen it. You mix some Tink’s #69 in a Scent Bomb with a little bit of rattling action, a little horn scrape and everything else and they’re going to come running. It’s inherent that’s going to happen. State by state it’s going to change. The rut’s different in every state. The latest rut was probably Ohio or Alabama. In those states, there’s deer chasing. Even in Georgia, I drove up and there was a big ten-pointer out in the field chasing after some doe. It depends on what time of year it is and where they are in their cycle.

Lastly, we have Trophy Bucks. Trophy Buck is a territorial lure. This is more of an aggressive lure. This can be used in the pre-rut, rut, or late season essentially. What this is it’s a perfect addition to using your mock scrapes or something of that nature because it’s a territorial advantage in it. It’s a curiosity lure. If a buck wants to know who’s been in the area, why they’ve been in their area so they’re going to go check it out every single time you use it. That is a huge advantage from the Tink’s system.

Any other product you want to bring up?

The less wind, the better. Share on X

We have two new products for Tink’s in 2019. We’ve advanced into that Tink’s #69 Doe-In-Rut themes. We introduced the Buck Wild Pads, which we introduced at ATA and shot this year. The Buck Wild Pads are individually wrapped. It’s taking the mess out of it. They’re individually wrapped with an elastomer wick. It will stretch up to six inches. It’s preloaded, pre-infused with Tink’s #69 formula. It’s perfect for pre-rut and rut. The great part is it’s going to be found at every retailer across the nation. It’s $9.99 MSRP, but you’re getting five hunts at least minimum with it. The felt wicks can also be added. You can buy a two-ounce bottle of Tink’s #69 and add it to it after once it dries up in the wind. You’ll get some longevity out of it. Lastly, we introduced our Fogger system. This is our BOV can. It’s a Bag-On-Valve system. What the BOV allows is there are no propellants added. It’s 100% natural lure. If you’ve ever fumigated your house when you go on vacation for bugs, it’s the same concept but it brings deer in. It’s neat. You can do it in short bursts. It’s got actuator top so you can lock it down and disperse the whole can in the woods. You’ll cloud the woods up with some stinky Tink’s #69.

There are other products out there that cover the scent cone. It depends on the wind. What I found is the less wind the better and you let it filter rather than get blown away. The deer will find it. They’ll come. You definitely want to be upwind, but you want them to find them. What I’ve done is set these bombs 50 yards apart from me, further across from me. Let the deer come to that and if you’re in terrain then terrain plays a big part of how the wind carries out that scent. You have to think strategically before you sit there and you’re in your tree stand and you say, “I’m going to blow this out.” That’s not the right idea because they know exactly where you are when you do that.

Like humans, whitetail is known for taking the road less traveled. You’ll know where the pinch points are when you see them. As far as playing the wind and not knowing where you’re staying at strategically, that is huge.

What else do you want to add?

The only last thing is Rack One. We expanded our Big Game Butter lineup. It’s 100% Georgia peanuts, 44% fat content, 22% protein. It brings deer in. We’ve used it on deer, pigs, bear but it is a natural attractant. It’s made for whitetail.

Lucas has shared a tremendous amount of information. Check out Arcus Hunting. Check out the brands we talked about. Personally, Dead Down Wind works well for me. Tink’s works well for me and has for many years. It’s application. I know some guys that go out and spray stuff and think it’s going to do the right thing. It’s application and there’s a whole system to the scent control. With the Ozone part added to Dead Down Wind, you’re going to get further scent control that we need because mature bucks are tough to hunt. What’s your one big thing that you know now about archery hunting that you wish you knew a few years ago?

I wish I was more patient being younger now. Not since I stepped into this world, knowing that patience does pay off. That is going to be the key to it. I’ve always been a prepared individual when it comes to scent control, having the right scents and stuff for that time of year. I would say being patient and knowing when the best times are to go and what stands, so the strategy behind it. It’s a waiting game. It’s like playing a game of chess at the end of the day. You’ve got to know where to be at the right time.

Lucas Mashtare, thank you so much for being a guest on Whitetail Rendezvous Gear Wednesday. I look forward to next time.
