Pass It On! Outdoors Mentors

Matching caring adults with a passion for the outdoors with children that want to learn about the outdoors...that's what the Pass It On program is about in a nutshell. A 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to giving children the chance to experience the great outdoors!

Whether it is fishing, camping, hiking, bird watching, archery, hunting, shooting sports, sailing...or just about any other traditional outdoor activity, we work to provide opportunities for children to learn about them in a safe environment from mentors willing to share their time.

What began as an effort on the part of Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks to bolster the ranks of hunters and fishers in 1999 has grown beyond the borders of Kansas to include activities in Alabama, Alaska, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. Thanks to the tremendous support of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the Pass It On program expanded in 2003 with pilot programs in Pennsylvania and Texas. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation played a significant role in making this happen as well.

Kansas

Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters (KSBBBS) matches children facing adversity with caring, adult mentors. We believe that all children - regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or family background - can achieve success in life, especially with the guidance and support of a caring adult mentor. These one-to-one professionally-supported friendships last a minimum of one year. However, the effects of these friendships last a lifetime.

TenPoint Crossbow

Rick’s association with archery and the archery industry goes back to his youth when his parents, Archery Hall of Famer, Bill Bednar, and his wife, Edith, founded Portage Archery Center in Suffield, OH. Rick and his sisters, Cindy and Joanna, who work for TenPoint as well, grew up in an apartment adjoining the pro shop building. That shop still operates today as Hunter’s Outlet Archery Center, a Division of TenPoint Crossbow Technologies.

As he grew up immersed in the family’s business, his father, Bill, also coached him as an elite tournament archer. Competing at the highest collegiate, national, and international levels, he traveled the world as a member of the USA Pan Am, World Target and World Field Archery teams; qualified for the 1976 Olympic Team; and won the NCAA Championship three-times at The University of Akron. Both his retail and competition background nurtured a strong interest in and appreciation for bow design, performance, and engineering.

Go Hunt

The idea for goHUNT started in 2013 with the realization that there was a huge missing piece when it comes to hunting in the West. It seemed every other industry had moved into the online space for the sake of making their consumers lives easier. The complacency of the old school informational hunting companies created a huge void that hunters needed filled. That void was the complete lack of a convenient way for hunters to research and plan for hunts with filterable data to accommodate their personal needs.

Sorinex

Over 37 years ago, back in 1980, a school teacher named Richard Sorin was sweating over a hot piece of hand-cut welded steel in a small 2 car garage. He had already taught the scholastic weightlifting club that morning, followed by AM bus duty, 8 hours of gym class, PM bus duty (for extra money that was used to eventually start his business), and then the jogging club for the teaching staff. Following the school day, he would tear across town to make it to the steel yard before it closed, strap steel to the roof of a 1974 Toyota Land Cruiser, and drive back across town to get started with his new business and dream... Sorin Exercise Equipment.

Real Tree

In 1986, very early in the camouflage revolution, Bill Jordan decided to try his hand at designing a camo pattern.

Bill had entered the hunting industry in 1983, when he started Spartan Archery Products in a back room of his father's boat dealership in Columbus, Georgia. Spartan manufactured t-shirts at a local mill, which were sold to a variety of large retail customers across the country. But the commodity garment trade was a tough, low-profit-margin business that depended on high volume—not easy for an established company and nearly impossible for a startup. Bill was pinching pennies and fishing bass tournaments on the side to create income. Meanwhile, he was constantly searching for ways to separate his company from the crowd.

National Bowhunter Education Foundation

Over 25 years ago a group of bowhunters met who were all members of the National Field Archery Association (NFAA). The purpose of the meeting was to discuss New Jersey native, Bill Wadsworth’s bowhunter education program. In 1969, Bill had written the course for the New York State Field Archers and Bowhunters Association and now wanted to take the program nationwide. After intense discussion, the group decided to follow Bill’s advice and help take the program nationwide. Originally, bowhunter education functioned as a separate committee of the NFAA. This committee was known as the Bowhunting and Conservation Committee of the NFAA. (See photos) Ten years later, bowhunter education was larger than any other single organization of bowhunters and with the blessing of the NFAA, the NBEF became a totally separate and independent 501 c 3 nonprofit foundation. On October 13, 1979, the first volunteer board of directors for the National Bowhunter Education Foundation met at the Land Between the Lakes Recreation Area in Kentucky. It was during that historic meeting that the group formally adopted the course (known as the International Bowhunter Education Program) which Bill had started 10 years earlier.

IBEP

The International Bowhunter Education Program was first advocated by Bill Wadsworth, who utilized experience from his association with the Boy Scouts of America to obtain worldwide acceptance of the curriculum. It was through his dedication that the National Bowhunter Education Foundation (NBEF) was formed. Wadsworth served as the first executive director of the organization.

Tacticalories

You can walk into every grocery store in America and see tens, if not hundreds of seasoning bottles. If you're like me (up until about 18 months ago), you'd be curious as to why you should choose one company over another. Our choices were plenty but the variation was, forgive the pun, quite stale. To be honest, I'm not even sure what the hell a "Montreal" tastes like, so why would I want it on my steak?

Seasoning your food is certainly not a recent phenomenon. In fact, I'm sure it started as soon as the first caveman tried to choke down the same old pterodactyl egg for the 13th day in a row. It's science. Adding some ground herbs, spices, and seasonings to even the most mundane meal can brighten your outlook on life. A day later, that caveman was selling his special blend to his cave-bros at the local watering hole.

The Outdoors Man

My first thought when starting to write this was, “why would anyone want to read what I have to say.” But, I guess this is for me and my kids more than anyone else. So what is “this”? It’s me, as a Husband, Father, Son, and Outdoorsman, my outdoor adventures, misadventures, and thoughts put down on the page to help me reminisce. Maybe my experiences will help whoever reads this be a better father, husband or outdoorsman, or show what not to do.

My father is an outdoorsman too, he taught me just about everything I know about hunting and fishing, and fostered the love for the outdoors that I have today. I grew up archery and rifle hunting whitetail deer, fishing on the local trout streams, and just being in the woods.

I am by no means a great hunter or fisherman or ever claimed to be one. I have no world record anything. What I am is a Husband, Father, and Son, raising three kids, trying to be a good husband, working a full-time job, and trying to throw in a few hunting and fishing outings along the way. What I want to be able to do with my kids, is what my Dad did with me, help them create a love for the outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, hiking, or whatever. So here I am… I am Dad, the Outdoorsman!

NWTF

When the National Wild Turkey Federation was founded in 1973, there were about 1.3 million wild turkeys in North America. After decades of dedicated work, that number hit an historic high of almost 7 million turkeys. The foundation of our success? Standing behind science-based conservation and hunters’ rights.

Thanks to the tremendous efforts of our dedicated volunteers, professional staff and committed partners, we have had many successes that advanced our mission. Together, we have facilitated the investment of $488 million in wildlife conservation and the preservation of North America’s hunting heritage. Our returns have included improving more than 17 million acres of wildlife habitat and introducing 100,000 people to the outdoors each year.

JR first proclaimed his intentions to start his own firearms academy back in the late 1980’s. As a student running the S.A.I.T. gun club, it seemed like a pipe dream. However, The Shooting Edge (TSE) was eventually founded in 2000 by two friends who shared a passion for shooting and in fact competed with and against each other for a number of years.
