Jerry Lannan Pro Staff Predator Quest TV – How to hunt Coyotes

I am on the Pro Staff for Predator Quest Tv with Les Johnson. I also have my own game call business called Deadly Dose Game calls. I enjoy helping other hunters out who maybe don’t know a lot about predator hunting, and there is nothing better that getting a call or a picture of a hunters first predator kill. Jerry Lannan pro Staff Predator Quest TV – How to hunt Coyotes
Well it all started back when I was about 14. Me and my dad went out; it’s a big piece of game land here and he started blowing on a little PS Olt fox coyote call. Next thing I know here comes a coyote running in towards us. We never even took a gun off our shoulders. We had no idea… At that time coyotes in Pennsylvania were unheard of. So we never ever took our gun off our shoulders. We watched it run in, looked at it, and it turned around, never saw us there, and ran out. Ever since then I’ve been hooked.
Oh, you have to regulate your population
Oh, you have to regulate your population. Once they get over, their population gets too much, it’s going to hurt everything, from your deer to your turkeys. Anything. Your small game. You have to, with some research that people have done and I read about, you have to kill 70% of the population, just to keep the population the same for the next year. When they have their little ones, they can have 6, 8, 10 little ones and you just can’t… They’re very, very hard to keep the population down, so it’s a struggle to keep it that way, to make sure you keep the population regulated. You don’t want it getting out of control, because that’s what’s going to bring in more diseases, which could lead getting to your animals, your own pets and stuff.
Bruce: Now tell me about how you like to control them.
Oh, you have to regulate your population
Jerry: Well Oh, you have to regulate your population They’re pretty hard to hunt here. What keeps Pennsylvania so good and keeps the population down is you have hundreds of thousands of whitetail hunters that are going out the first day of rifle season here in PA. You’re always hearing about this guy down the road here. “Oh, he shot a coyote the first day.” That helps us here in Pennsylvania, as far as keeping the population down.
Summer is a good time to hunt them because you’re going to get their pups.
I go out to hunt them probably at minimum two or three times a week, even during the summer. Summer is a good time to hunt them because you’re going to get their pups. Any time throughout the summer because you’re going to have new coyotes that haven’t been called to yet and it’s easier to get them called in and take them. That way you’re cutting down the population that way too. But I’m sorry. What was the question there again?
