we’re heading to Iowa, Des Moines, Iowa to be exact and we’re going to talk to a displaced Mississippi boy, who for whatever reason decided he had to move to Iowa to shoot big bucks. Ryan Carson grows big bucks. Now we all know the size of deer in Mississippi, they got some swamp donkeys down there but this guy had to go to Iowa.

with a father that taught me at a young age to handle a weapon

Luckily I grew up with a father that taught me at a young age to handle a weapon.I think I started out with a BB gun and I was to treat that as a serious firearm and when I proved that I could do that I moved up to a little .410 shotgun and so on and so forth, just moved all the way up. So I take weapons very seriously and I’m real safe in the outdoors and I was always taught to identify your target but also identify what’s behind your target. Ryan Carson grows big bucks

And then make your shot. Take your time and a lot of people just were never taught that or have forgotten that and make mistakes due to the excitement of seeing a large deer or a pheasant. Those pheasants will jump up and flush between you and another shooter and a lot of times I’m not going to injure somebody just to shoot a pheasant. So I’ve let actually a lot of birds fly off just because out of my field of view there’s somebody in there. And so I just will choose not to take the shot. Ryan Carson grows big bucks

so I just will choose not to take the shot

My dad was always a hunter. He was considered the redneck of the family. He was probably the only one that really hunted. Since I can remember, he has had me outdoors in the woods just enjoying the outdoors. I remember just bits and pieces of childhood memory but I remember being small enough that he would carry me and then carry a sleeping bag and put me in the stand and just let me sleep and then he’d wake me up because I was so small, he’d wake me up and show me the deer, show me the squirrels and teach me everything about the outdoors.

That’s one of my things I tell people, a lot of people will go hunting and they’re like, “Did you harvest it or did you kill anything?” and I’m like, “No.” And they’re like, “Well, I’m sorry.” And I’m like, “What are you sorry for? I still got to spend a great day outside watching wildlife. It was a beautiful morning.” That’s what I get out of the outdoors. Yes, it’s great to harvest a big buck and get your limit of squirrels or pheasants but it’s also just my dad taught me it’s more about having fun with your family and friends than just going out there and killing something and coming home.

It was a beautiful morning.” That’s what I get out of the outdoors.

But he started me out super young. I can remember, growing up in the South every guy hunts. And it’s a little bit different here in Iowa not every guy hunts, but growing up in the South all your friends hunted, a lot of girls hunted, that’s just part of life down there. The seasons are longer so you have what we call deer camps. I don’t see those as much here in Iowa. I wish there were more because every was a deer camp during deer season, all day Saturday and Sunday.
