Wayne Partridge of Partridge Outdoors produces highly nutritional deer attractants

Welcome to another edition of Whitetail Rendezvous. This is your host, Bruce Hutcheon, and we’re heading to the Midwest today and we’re going to connect with Wayne and Carol Partridge. I had the fortunate situation to connect with Wayne and Carol when I was hunting Buffalo County with Buffalo County Bucks in Waumandee, Wisconsin. We spent a little bit of time in the Waumandee House, talking about whitetails and I said, “Wayne, when you get home, let’s get you on the show and talk about Partridge Outdoors, his new company. But more so let’s talk about bow hunting up and personal.”
So Wayne, welcome to the show.
Wayne: Hi, Bruce. How are ya?
Bruce: I’m doing great! And I hope you had a great Christmas.
Wayne: You, too. We did. We had an excellent holidays. It’s getting kind of cold here in New York now though.
Bruce: Well it better be. It’s almost January!
Wayne: Yeah!
Bruce: We had a strange fall; that’s for sure. So let’s start the show right off and let’s talk about Partridge Outdoors, which you’re going to launch soon. And then we’ll talk about the background of that product and that company, and then we’re going to talk about whitetail hunting. How’s that?
Wayne: Sounds great.
Bruce: All right. Well let’s talk about Partridge Outdoors and why you and Carol are launching the company.
Wayne: All right. We are starting the company with deer attractants and supplements. I know I’ve used a lot of stuff out there, bought a lot of attractants from the stores and stuff, all the big names on TV, and a lot of them to me just didn’t work very good. So we started messing around with some different things and we’ve come up with some pretty good stuff right now.
Bruce: Well let’s talk about that stuff. What is it specifically? And how is it going to help all the whitetail hunters?
Wayne: Well, I don’t know. Most of the stuff in the stores, it’s just powder and you dump it on the ground. I’ve dumped some of the stuff on the ground and deer don’t even touch it. The attractants we’re making are all natural. There’s a couple of different types: some soybean, some corn. But our deer are digging holes in the ground to get more when we put it out. I know a lot of guys spend a lot of money hunting and stuff, and on all the things for hunting, and I hate to see the guys waste money on stuff that doesn’t work.
Bruce: Why do you think it doesn’t work, Wayne?
Wayne: I’m not sure, Bruce. I don’t know what they make it out of. To me, our attractants, you can actually see what is in them, as opposed to just pure powder, different colored powders that you dump on the ground. Ours is very nutritional, high in protein, and the deer just love it. They’re just tearing it up.
So what is it that make the deer come back? What are the deer looking for, so they’re digging through the ground looking for this either attractant or supplement?
Bruce: So what is it that make the deer come back? What are the deer looking for, so they’re digging through the ground looking for this either attractant or supplement?
Wayne: Well it’s just some of the stuff we’re using. We’re using roasted soybeans in one of them and they just tear it up. And even the ones with the corn, there’s different stuff that we’re putting in it. And we went through nutritionists and the deer just seem to love it. They’re digging holes in the ground for it.
Bruce: Now you mentioned nutritionists. What did the nutritionists say that whitetails really need and will come to this product?
Wayne: Well that’s the whole thing. We wanted to make it nutritional. We weren’t just trying to attract them. We wanted something that would grow horns bigger and make them more healthy. And they’ve come back with a couple different ingredients for a couple different supplements and it’s all going to be top of the line stuff. Very nutritional for the whitetail.
Bruce: So what is the whitetail looking for when they come in and get the supplement? Are they looking for protein? Are they looking for a specific mineral? I’m not asking you to give away proprietary information, but help me and the listeners understand why it’s important to use attractants and to use supplements.
Wayne: Well at first we did it just to attract them and then we wanted to put minerals and all the stuff to make them healthy. Some of the different flavors and stuff that we’re using, that’s what is attracting them to come in. They’re eating it and just by eating it, they’re getting all these top minerals, and vitamins, and stuff.
Bruce: So does it help them with horn growth? Or does it help them with overall health so that they can…
Wayne: I think both. I think it’s… Well it’s definitely overall health, but also it’s very nutritional and it’s great for the horn growth, some of the stuff we’re doing.
Bruce: So is this a 365-day-a-year product? Or only put out in the summer? Or the winter? When would you put it out?
Wayne: It could be used all year, as far as for the nutritional end of it. But for the guy that goes away on a five-day hunt and spends a lot of money, dumps a couple of bucks, it’s a fast attractant. They find it quick and they keep coming back, so it’s good both ways.
Bruce: So you’ve shared with us about the fact that you’re starting the company because you tried some products and it just didn’t get the results you wanted. So now you’ve gone to a nutritionist, and built a product, and built the formula if you will that seems to be working. Now are you field testing it right now?
Wayne: Well I live in New York. We’re not allowed to do anything as far as baiting or attractants or anything in New York State, so I have a lot of my friends that go out West every year; I try to get to a couple of states every year, and that’s our big thing. And I have guys in other states that are using it, well mostly the deer season that just passed, and they’ve had phenomenal results with it.
Bruce: Now do you have a website? Where someone if they were interested, one, could kind of see the testimonials, and two, get in touch with you and say, “Hey, I would like to be a field tester and maybe get your product at a discount,” or whatever, however you want to work that out.
Wayne: Right.
Bruce: How would people, if they had an interest in being a field tester, how would they get in touch with you?
Wayne: Right now we just have an email. Like I said, we’re still working things out, all the legalities of it. By this spring we’ll have the website and everything. People can call, order it. We’re just still working out all the loose ends right now, but we do have a website, which is [email protected]. If anybody had any questions or anything, they can contact us like that for now.
Bruce: Okay. So you do have field testers though. You said that this past hunting season they got great results. So I’m thinking about in some of the states that you don’t have people, if you wanted to have a person be a field tester, so they just go to your email address at [email protected] and say, “Hey, I would like to try your product.”
Wayne: Right.
One of the things that we’re passionate about is bringing new people into the out-of-doors, into the hunting community
Bruce: Well that’s great. And listeners, since I met Wayne and Carol, and I told them I would like to have them on the show to kind of boost their release of the product, which is going to come later this spring, because they’re great folks. Wayne is a great hunter and it’s interesting that he was one of the few guys that was in camp at the Waumandee House that brought his wife. So let’s swing right over to that.
One of the things that we’re passionate about is bringing new people into the out-of-doors, into the hunting community, so let’s talk about how you got your wife to tag along and become a huntress.
Wayne: Yeah, my wife is like my best friend. She is my hunting partner. We got married a few years back and she just loves it. I put her in some tree stands and she just couldn’t believe when the deer is getting in close. And we set her up with her first bow and arrow and she’s going to town. She actually harvested her first bow kill this year in New York State and she did great with a gun.
She also got a nice eight-pointer with a gun during gun season, so she’s really into it. I have a lot of guys around that never knew much about hunting. I love bringing guys out and putting them in the stand, or showing them how to find a good spot for a stand, and watch those guys kill deer. They come back to me with big smiles on their faces. We just love getting other people into it.
Bruce: Let’s talk about advice to guys that have a wife and they’re sorta kinda interested. What specifically did you do to get Carol into that tree stand and help her harvest her first buck?
